Genius Hour Reflection
My Genius Hour project was to learn new songs on the guitar. The purpose of this project was to better myself by becoming a better guitar player and, to help others become better guitar players by posting guitar tutorials on YouTube. To start my project I had to start learning new songs. This took a lot of work and a few weeks time but I was able to learn a lot! After I had learned the songs I had to practice them a lot to really get them down. This was one of the more challenging things because it required a lot of effort, time, and hard work. I was able to get the songs down though, which was a rewarding feeling. Learning songs, especially, a lot of songs is very frustrating. At times, I didn’t want to finish this project but I kept at it and I was able to learn a total of 7 songs since starting this project. While I had hoped to learn more, I still feel like this project was a success because it drove me to become a better guitar player. In order for this project to be successful, I needed to put the songs on youtube and also figure out a way for local musicians to check out my videos. I decided that I would create flyers to give to the cashier at Jim’s Music in Iron Mountain. I chose Jim’s because I took lessons there for over 5 years and they have an excellent store. Hopefully with the steps I have taken, my work can be impactful to a young aspiring musician. If I could do anything differently with my project, I would have learned more songs. I originally planned on learning a lot more but it was a lot more challenging than I had thought. If I would have put more time in, I would have been able to learn more difficult songs too. My goal is to continue working on songs and hopefully make more tutorials. Another Thing I would have done differently would be invest in a microphone because the sound quality of my videos were terrible. I wish I would have been able to make better quality videos because they get more views and in turn, impact more people. This is something I would like to accomplish in the future as I hope to continue making tutorials to help anyone who is trying to learn songs in all genres of music. Overall I think that My Genius Hour project was a success. I accomplished my goal of becoming a better guitar player. I also took the steps to get my videos out to the community and the public by posting my videos on YouTube. Now, hopefully people will watch my videos, and if they learn something, even better! Another way this project was successful was that it helped me regain a love for playing guitar and gave me a new interest in making guitar tutorials. I really hope to continue this and become a better guitar player and video maker. I have learned that both of those things are challenging and require a ton of work and time. My plan to complete my Genius Hour Project is to finish recording my videos. Once that is done I need to upload them to Youtube and then put them on my website. I also need to deliver my flyers to Jims Music and hope that they give them out to people.
I have decided to change my genius hour project because the last project I had was really difficult to do. There wasn't a lot of information or different ways I could go with it. It was just overall a bad choice. I hope that my finished project looks like myself as a better guitar player and my website as a place for people who want to learn guitar to go for many resources and information. Beyond helping them learn how to play, I hope to include my opinions on good guitars and equipment for begginers.
#1So far the most useful resource I have found is: hhtp://www.careersinwelding.com. It has a lot of information about all of the jobs available, salary information, information on the different types of welding, and much more. I have also found a lot of information online about public speaking tips for when I speak to younger students. #2If I had unlimited time for my Genius Hour project I would spend it gathering information and sharing it with many more younger students. I would be able to teach them about all of the tech center classes and not just a couple of them. This would help my project because not all students enjoy the things that I enjoy and if there is a class that interests them at the tech center I would be able to give them much more information on the class.
If I had unlimited money I would be able to broaden the number of students I talked to by expanding to maybe even other schools in the area. Gas and materials cost a lot of money these days and if I had unlimited money there would be absolutely no limit on what my project could succeed. What excites you most about your Genius Hour Project? I am most excited about getting kids interested in the opportunities the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District has to offer. There is so many different classes at the tech center that hopefully everyone can find a class that interests them. We are very lucky to receive college level courses for free and I am excited to help younger students see the benefits and take advantage of this opportunity. What concerns you most about your Genius Hour Project?I am most concerned about speaking publicly. For my topic there is a great chance that I will be speaking to younger students. This concerns me because I am not a good speaker. I get very nervous whenever I have to make a speech and I always end up doing poorly. However part of my project will be improving my speaking skills and hopefully I will do a good job. What progress have you made so far on your project? So far, I have not made a ground-breaking amount of progress on my project. However, I have chosen a topic, made a website, and I have done quite a bit of brainstorming for the rest of the project. As weeks go by the amount of progress will start to increase drastically.
